Resumen:
Nowadays, the industry is demanding new composite materials for replacing traditional materials. Among these materials, nanocomposites are being expected that could provide a high performance for industrial applications. In this study, the nanocomposites were manufactured by extrusion and subsequent molding of an epoxy resin modified with silicon carbide (SiC) and boron carbide (B4C) nanoparticles. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of the nanocarbides on the mechanical properties. The nanoparticles were added in two ratios 6 and 12% by weight. The mechanical properties on bulk specimens were studied by means of tensile test, three-point bending test and Shore D hardness test. The modulus of elasticity (E) was determined using the impulse excitation technique. Afterwards, specimen fracture surfaces were studied by SEM to evaluate the quality of the matrix-reinforcement bonding and dispersion of the nanoparticles. Results of this study showed a good dispersion of the nanoparticles, an increment of the modulus of elasticity for 6 wt.% loadings and a reduction in deformation related to the neat resin.
